TESOL Course Change Your Teaching Methord

Today I have finished my whole TESOL Advanced Program course. As an experienced teacher , I’ve gained a lot.

During this course, Alex tells us a lot of Warm-up activities, which is so funny. I thought a lot about my present class after the first day’s class, because I always kept teaching my students knowledge points and language skills all the time without let them feel fun behind English. There definitely are some problems in my class, say, some students can’t focus on their mind all the time and some students can’t remember what I told them. Faced this situation, I always complain about their language foundation and their parents’ guide at home. I got the solutions in this course. Actually, there are 8 kinds of learners,verbal learner, audio learner, musical learner, social learner, solitary learner , physical learner, logical learner and combination learner. What I should do is to improve myself instead of complaining about my students, even their parents. I must implement different teaching methods to different learners. Actually, some ways are easy for me to take up in my class, say, for musical learner, I can prepare some pieces of music and rhyme very easily. I remind myself that I must do it after going back to my class.


Besides that, the 8 thinking maps (bubble map, double bubble map, tree map, brace map, bridge map , flow map, multi-flow map and circle map )made a deep impression on me. I’ve seen these thinking maps on the book before. But I seldom used them in my class. During TESOL class, I’ve got know deeper about these thinking maps, which really a good tool for teaching vocabularies, reading and summary. I will use them and also encourage my students to use them.


Next, that is how to teach vocabulary. Teaching vocabulary should cover 4 aspects, spelling, usage, meaning and pronunciation. I often pay more attention to spelling rather than the usage in different situation and different meanings. Also, what Alex brought to me is the clear concepts of word formation, compounding, conversion, clipping, back formation, blending, onomatopoeia, acronyms and eponym. Before that, I am just familiar with compounding, onomatopoeia and misunderstand abbreviation as clipping. Once I made mistake and even ignore this part. That is so silly. Being a teacher must be learn all the time. During this part, I know the importance of practice. Furthermore, it’s better to practice in different and funny classroom activities. For instance, hitting monster ,repetition, word association and word network are good way to consolidate the vocabularies.


Now I want to recall how to teach WH questions. I think I emphasized on the WH questions in my class. But the feedback and response from my students always are not what I want.It’s more likely for them to answer my questions by using just one word or one phrase. They rarely talk too much about a topic or a question. However some tools introduced in the TESOL course are very useful, like Talktastic Board game and 5W chant:

who, what,when where why why

Who, what, when , where, why why

who did it.

What did you do.

When did you do it.

who, what,when where why why

Who, what, when , where, why why

Rhyme is a fantastic way to remember all the things, especially for teenagers and kids. I like it.


Then, in how to teach speaking part? In fact, I always emphasize on spelling and reading part. After this course, I’ve got so much idea about   how to teach speaking part. Meanwhile , I will give speaking part more attention and improve my students’ ability to speak. First, I should change my class into whole-English speaking class. That means I should prepare a lot before the class. Definitely the speaking activity is really important, script role play, unscripted role play, interview ,questionnaire and Lie to me. One of the activity is very practical,that is , six thinking hat. This is to say, we can describe a topic in six aspects, topic, facts, feelings, good , bad and creative. Cool! If one person can think about one topic in these ways, he will get a lot of to say.

Last, I want to talk about what I have learned from how to teach reading part. Reading is the core of learning the second language. In my class, teaching reading is a little bit boring for my students. It’s more likely to be a translation class. During this course, I’ve got a lot of interesting reading activities, like Jigsaw Reading(just like a puzzle reading) . After going back to Wuhan , I can use mind map and interesting reading activities to read original articles.

In conclusion, I’ve learned a lot. I like this course. I keep taking note in my room at each night. I want to keep and practice these methods in my whole class and share them with my friends. Thanks for TESOL Advanced Program and Thanks, Alex!
